Early in my career I was fortunate enough to be part of a company where the development and implementation of a successful quarterly business plan was an essential part of the job. As opposed to being something I dusted off quarterly, my business plan became what I called a living, breathing document that I reviewed often. As a field sales representative my plan was rolled-up into a regional, then company-wide plan and implemented. Everyone in the organization was on the same page. Our goals were clear and our actions were focused. In a few years we went from nearly closing our doors to being #1 in sales in the highly competitive medical imaging equipment market and winning the Malcom Baldrige National Quality Award. Personally, I was always ranked within the top 5 and twice was #1 in worldwide sales.
